Project: YSL Window Display Series: Mirror

I worked closely with a Saint Laurent Window Display artist to explore the concept of Infinity by exploring reflection, materials, and movement. With the concept of moving mirror pieces, I helped to design a system for 3 individual sculptures for the Paris and New York YSL stores.

The biggest sculpture is made by 300+ assembled mirror boxes and black acrylic boxes. The mirror boxes have a triangle shape, a long rectangular shape and a cube shape, with each side including the top and bottom are covered with mirrors. The black acrylic boxes have the same three shape types, but each one has a different pattern with assembled metal spikes and studs.

Using V-ray with Rhino, I started the project by creating a rendering (shown below). I then made an animation to help the artist present this idea to our clients. To create the animation actually, I coded in Grasshopper to control the speed of rotation for each shape and rendered out frame by frame.

After the animation, I worked on prototypes of the acrylic box patterns and 3D modeled the remaining details of the shapes and structures to support the motor in each box.

It's a mirror miracle.
