Project: 3D Tattoo Machine

I have to admit that having tattoos is addictive. So how can you have a tattoo done by a talented artist without meeting the artist in person? Let the 3D tattoo machine help you. All you have to do is to put your arm on the target table, tell the artist what tattoo you want, and the artist will operate the machine to produce a magical piece of art.

This was a prop for a commercial ad, not a real one (I wish), that I designed and fabricated. I was provided by a small used 3'x2' CNC machine which I remodeled to look futuristic and functional for making tattoos. I designed an ink holder with a screen attached so one could video chat with the artist, a fan with lights to show the rotation of the ink pens, a needle holder with LED lights, and a needle that could be operated in 3 dimensions.

Upon client approval of the design, the parts I designed through 3D modeling were sent to 3D printing, then cleaned and assembled to produce the tattoo machine.  Upon completion of assembly, the parts were painted black for the body and silver for the top of the machinery. I help manage and direct work with the electrician for proper light installation. This was a fun job.

I can't wait for my next tattoo.
